Easy recipe of Dates and tamarind chutney. This Dates and tamarind chutney served along with samosa, khaman dhokla, vada pav or other appetizers and many chats.

In India, tamarind has been used for ages, be it in candy form, in chutneys, in soups, curries, or as Ayurvedic medicine. It is an indispensable ingredient in the cuisines of South Indian states. Maybe due to its strong and unique taste, tamarind found diverse uses across the world. The word tamarind comes from the Arabic word “tamr-hindī” or ‘Indian date’.

Ayurveda is believed that take tamarind and row sugar and dissolve in water and drink, it will help you to protect yourself from heat. Tamarind chutney is very popular for a chat. Without this chutney chat is incomplete. We can make tamarind and dates chutney in bulk and frozen it whenever need just take in a microwave-safe bowl and reheat.

Recipe of Dates and tamarind chutney is quick and easy. Here I add roasted jeera (cumin) what gives the chutney a very smoky flavor. We can also use sugar instead of jaggery. But jaggery is healthier than sugar so better to use jaggery. Use seedless dates date otherwise, it will give the chutney a bitter taste. Enjoy this tamarind and dates chutney with any chat. It is very tempting and finger-licking.    

You will find this chutney served along with samosa, khaman dhokla, vada pav or other appetizers. It is an essential part of many chaat dishes such as pani puri, dahi puri, ragda patties  

Ingredients

Tamarind1/4 cup
Dates1 cup
Jaggery1/2 cup
Saltas per taste
Red chilly powder1/2 tsp
Black Saltas per taste
Roasted Jeera (Cumin)1/2 tsp
Water1 1/2 Cup

Preparation

  • First, take tamarind and remove its seeds and hard stick. You can also use tamarind pulp if available.
  • Now take one saucepan, add tamarind, jaggery, dates, water.
  • On medium heat, let it boil till dates have become very soft.
  • Now let it cool down to room temperature.
  • Add above boiled mixer in the grinder. And grind till it becomes smooth paste.
  • Take one bowl and put a drainer on it and drain that smooth paste. You can add water if you want.
  • Now add other spices like salt, red chili powder, black salt, roasted jeera (cumin).
  • After that, stir well till all spices mix very well.
  • Your chutney is ready now. Garnish with coriander.
